40Plus in the Post

September 28, 2008

Make sure you check out Gabe Goldberg’s article about 40Plus published in the Sunday Jobs Section of the Washington Post.  It’s a great summary of 40Plus and helps get our message to the broader community.  For more reactions, I’ve taken the liberty of copying key parts of an email from 40Plus Board Chair Allen Rotz:

“The article begins by showing that at 40Plus there is not only energy but an awareness of working effectively in a multigenerational environment.  And to be effective, there must be good communication between the generations. . . .  This intergenerational communication issue is one that 40Plus needs to incorporate in its core program.  This is vital in today’s workplace and it is something that can negate age issues and counter 40pluser being viewed as being out of touch.”

Any other thoughts?

Fascinating session

September 22, 2008

Don’t know if the financial market meltdown had any do with it, but we had an unusually large number of first-time visitors to our Monday morning meeting today.  It turned into a fascinating session because at the last minute we weren’t able to schedule a regular speaker and instead organized a resume workshop.

40Plus members David Powell, Mark Thalhimer and Dave Heffernan put on a lively presentation that provided visitors useful insight about resumes and success bites as well as a nice sampling of how 40Plus operates.  We plan to do similar resume and networking workshops in the future (a Grad Class in networking offered October 11, for example), and members should keep alert for opportunities and details.  Also,  it just goes to show that sometimes the best marketing tool is simply doing what you know best.

Thinking Outside the Box

September 15, 2008

Today’s meeting at 40Plus was an invitation to start thinking outside your comfort zone of what you know and start examining new ways to transfer current skills into new areas. To do that, you need to do some critical self-examination to decide what your needs, skills and areas of interest really are and drill down to the things you most love, or are best at. Then you start your search into segments of the job market where you can use familiar skills and talents doing new things.

Today’s presenter, Cindy Morgan-Jaffe of OrchidSuites, is a great example of someone who has used the outside-the-box thinking style to advance her own career. She left 40Plus attendees with some very useful tips and ideas for advancing our own career searches. She can be reached at cmjaffe@orchidsuites.net. More information about her company can be found at www.orchidsuites.net.
