    You know, I’ve tried this method and also doing as suggested and making a list of companies I’d like to work for and then either applying and/or requesting informational interviews with them.

    Never had ANY luck. Mostly these unsolicited applications and requests simply get ignored or at best, you get a reply along the lines of “Thank you for your interest in ABC company. We currently have no open positions that match your profile but feel free to keep checking back” sort of thing.
